GLENWOOD PREPARING A STAR-SPANGLED SENDOFF FOR RAGBRAI XXXXIV!!!

Glenwood will be hosting RAGBRAI, the Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa for the 7th time in 44 years!  We will be tied with Sioux City for the most starts as an overnight town!  We will have the opportunity to share our community, homes, and quality of life amenities with about 20,000 visitors the weekend of July 23rd, 2016.  Last August, a letter of consideration was sent to RAGBRAI.  More than 200 communities are on a waiting list to host. We were selected in late January and since then; a RAGBRAI Advisory Board has been developed along with four Executive Chairs and close to 40 Committee Chairs. All have stepped up and are volunteering to lead the planning, coordination, and success of this event.

Starting on Thursday, July 21st, you will see the RAGBRAI visitors begin to arrive in Glenwood.  More will arrive on Friday, July 22nd, with the majority arriving the morning of Saturday, July 23rd.  The Glenwood Town Square will feature many vendor booths, entertainment, and the beverage garden.  Our visitors will depart on Sunday, July 24th and head to Malvern.

All of those involved with the planning and coordination are VOLUNTEERS!  They attend many planning meetings and work together.  One of our many tasks is to generate revenue to pay for hosting 20,000 visitors.  The beverage garden, vendor fees, and generous sponsorships help offset the expenses for the beverage garden, law enforcement & public safety, insurance, medical, port-a-potties, signs, transportation, printing, radios & communication, decorations, trash, sanitation, recycling, entertainment, and publicity.  It is projected that RAGBRAI 2016 in Glenwood will cost close to $100,000 this year.  In 2011, RAGBRAI expenses were $77,000.  After all expenses are met, any profits will be used for a community project.  Proceeds from 2011 were used to put speakers on the Glenwood Town Square for the enjoyment of the entire community.

Should you have any questions about Glenwood RAGBRAI, visit our website at www.ragbraiglenwood.com or, call the Glenwood Area Chamber of Commerce Office and we can direct your questions to the appropriate chairperson.

712-527-3298.  Volunteers, vendors, and sponsors are still needed.  We project needing about 600+ volunteers in preparation and on the day of the event.  Join us, meet new people, and help us showcase Glenwood to our visitors from all over the globe!
